Preparing for Rainstorms
It doesn't rain much at KAUST, but it does rain about once per year. Even if you are from a country where it rains often, It's important to take rain at KAUST seriously, as flooding and other rain-related problems have caused significant problems in the past.
Here are a few tips for being prepared for a rainstorm at KAUST:
Make sure your car is parked uphill somewhere. Do not park where water may gather.
Put a towel against your front door to prevent water coming under the door.
KAUST does receive the occasional sandstorm. During periods of strong winds coupled with a sandstorm, it is necessary to take appropriate precautions and safety measures.
When outside:
Watch for flying debris. Tree limbs may break, building material may fall, and street signs may come loose during strong winds.
Use handrails where available.
Stand clear of roadways as a gust may cause you to stumble into the path of an oncoming vehicle.
Avoid working in non-secure places and especially at heights.
When driving:
Keep both hands on the wheel and drive at a cautious speed.
Watch for objects blowing across the roadway.
Keep a safe distance from cars in adjacent lanes, as strong gusts may cause other vehicles to veer outside their lane.
If winds are severe enough to prevent safe driving, carefully pull off the road and stop, making sure you are away from trees or other tall objects that could fall onto your vehicle.
